How does a workout beginner like me get started?

              djericho21 asked:

I have access to a fitness center on campus, but I’d like to know what I should do when I’m there. My goals are both to lose weight and gain muscle, but mostly gain muscle. I want to tighten up my body all over. I don’t know if I want to be “ripped”, but I do want to be fit.
How should I exercise, and how should I start eating?

                      Exercise Prescription?

                      jessi asked:

I’m having to do an exercise prescription for my Concepts of Fitness class and one of the things I am confused about is the duration and the progression. I planning on basing the prescription around a walking program. Start at 1 mile in the first seven weeks, and ending around 3 miles by week 21-28. Is this the duration???????

                      And
On the progression of the program, would you say that you gradually increase the distance walked? What could you change about it to give you a better workout if all you are doing is walking? Would hand weights be efficient and if so would you increase the poundage of the weights? And if you use weights at all, what would they do for the program?

                      Any help is greatly appreciated!
